Hartford Artisans Weaving
Center / Volunteer Opportunity
The Hartford Artisans
Weaving Center is a non-profit group staffed
by volunteers. Our mission is to
teach the craft of handweaving to people with
low or no vision and those 55 and older. The
artisans learn to weave beautiful scarves,
throws, bags, wall hangings, and more. They
get a sense of accomplishment from mastering the
complex craft of weaving. They form friendships
and conquer isolation in a caring, creative
community, and they get a financial reward as
well. The wonderful items they create are sold
through our Open House sales, craft fairs, and
our own on site store.
Many of our artisans do not
drive. Some rely on Dial-A-Ride, which has
geographic limitations and is not very punctual.
We have a great need for volunteers who can
pick up one or two artisans and bring them to
our Center and back on a regular basis.
Our studios are at 40
Woodland Street, Hartford. The artisans live in
Hartford, West Hartford, East Hartford,
Wethersfield, and Farmington. Our hours of
operation are 10 -4, Monday through Thursday,
and most of our artisans attend at least two
days per week. If anyone is interested in
helping out, we will work with them to come up
with a schedule that will be convenient for all
concerned.

Everybody Wins! CT
Everybody Wins! CT
is a not-for-profit literacy and mentoring
organization serving the capital region.
We are an independent affiliate of
Everybody Wins! USA,
which has provided reading enrichment and
mentoring programs for at-risk youth in over 16
states since the program’s origins in New York
City in 1991.
The
flagship program of Everybody Wins! is “Power
Lunch,” a lunchtime read-aloud program that
matches adult volunteers – Reading Mentors –
with children who read below grade level and/or
need a positive adult role model. Once per
week, volunteers meet with the same children for
a one-on-one half-hour reading session.
Everybody Wins! CT already has over 330
volunteers in the capital region reading to
children – but so much more can be done.
Despite recent improvements in standardized test
scores, children in cities like Hartford and New
Britain still fall behind their suburban
counterparts in literacy skills due to one of
the widest achievement gaps in the nation.
Some of
our most skilled and dedicated volunteers are
retired teachers – and we would love to have
even more of them among our legions of Reading
Mentors!
